Kazunoko (Herring Roe)
Herring roe has so many eggs in a tight cluster. And herring in Japanese sounds the same as saying “two parents” (Nishin). It symbolizes a wish to be gifted with many children in the New Year and great harvest.
Kuri Kinton (Candied Chestnuts with Mashed Sweet Potatoes)
“Kin” means Gold in Japanese. This dish symbolizes great fortune and prosperity to come.
Kuromame (Sweet Black Soybeans)
In Taoism, the color black is believed to protect one from evil. It is believed that these beans give message that one should “work hard till you are tanned so dark”, symbolizing longevity and good health.
Ise Ebi (Ise lobster)
Symbolizes longevity with a message of “live long till one gets hunched back” like lobsters. The color red of lobsters is believed to help get rid of demons.

Gobo (Burdock)
Burdock symbolizes auspicious bird representing good harvest. It is to wish for a fruitful year and good health. The color black is believed to protect one from evil.
Tazukuri (Candied Sardines)
The name Tazukuri meaning “making of rice field” is derived from small sardine bones being used as fertilizer for rice fields in the past. As one of the three main celebrative assortments, Tazukuri represents a wish for great harvest.
Kohaku Kamaboko (Red and White Fish Cake)
Kamaboko symbolizes sunrise. The color red represents joy and happiness and white represents holiness.
Kobumaki (Kombu Seaweed Roll)
Kobu has the partial sound of “Yorokobu”, which means rejoice in Japanese.
Kobu can also be written in combination of Japanese symbols that means “child” and “life”. Therefore, Kobumaki represents prosperity of descendants.

Namasu (Vinegar Daikon and Carrots)
The color of daikon radish and carrots are red and white which are the colors of celebration in Japan. The fine thinly strips of these mixed colors also seem like a traditional decoration for Japanese envelope which are used for celebrative occasions. Therefore, Namasu symbolizes a fortune gift wishing for peace.
Kani (Crab)
Crabs hold their eggs to nurture and molt to grow bigger. Waiving around its claws represents catching good fortune.
Yakizakana (Grilled Fish)
Yellowtail is seen as the fish of success. Salmon is seen as the messenger of gods as it goes up and down the river in the mountain to the sea freely.
Sazae (Turban Shell)
Conch shells are said to make one’s wish come true. Sazae, among all is believe to bring good luck.
